A media converter that works on your own device
Most online video converters upload your file to a server, convert it there, and send it back. This one does the work inside your browser instead, using a build of FFmpeg, the open-source engine behind many desktop video apps, compiled to WebAssembly. Nothing is uploaded, so there is no queue, no account, no watermark and no daily file count. The trade-off is that speed and maximum file size depend on your own computer or phone.
The first time you press Convert, the page downloads the converter engine (about 32 MB) from a public code CDN. Your browser keeps a copy, so later conversions start much faster.
Which format should you choose?
| Format | Type | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| MP3 | Audio, lossy | Plays on almost everything. The usual choice for pulling the sound out of a video. |
| M4A / AAC | Audio, lossy | Slightly better sound than MP3 at the same bitrate. Native on Apple devices. |
| WAV | Audio, uncompressed | Editing and audio software. Large files: about 10 MB per minute of stereo sound. |
| FLAC | Audio, lossless | Archiving music with no quality loss, at roughly half the size of WAV. |
| OGG / OPUS | Audio, lossy | Open formats. Opus is very efficient for speech and voice notes. |
| MP4 | Video (H.264 + AAC) | The safest video format for phones, social media, messaging apps and TVs. |
| MOV | Video (H.264 + AAC) | Apple's container. Useful for iMovie, Final Cut and older Mac software. |
| MKV | Video (H.264 + AAC) | Flexible container, popular with desktop players such as VLC. |
| WebM | Video (VP8 + Vorbis) | Open format for web pages. Slower to create than MP4. |
| AVI | Video (MPEG-4 + MP3) | Old players, car stereos and legacy Windows software. |
| GIF | Animation, no sound | Short clips of a few seconds. Long videos make very large GIFs. |
What the quality settings do
For MP3, M4A, OGG, OPUS and AAC you choose a bitrate. 192 kbps is a sensible default for music; 128 kbps is fine for speech and podcasts; 320 kbps is the highest MP3 allows. Choosing a higher bitrate than the original file had does not bring back detail that was already removed. It only makes the file bigger.
For video, "High quality", "Balanced" and "Smaller file" change how strongly the picture is compressed. You can also reduce the resolution, for example 1080p down to 720p, which is the most effective way to shrink a video for email or messaging. Resolution is never increased: a 480p clip set to 1080p stays at 480p.
For MP4, MOV and MKV there is also "Keep original quality (fast copy)". This moves the existing video and audio streams into the new container without re-compressing them, so it finishes in seconds and loses no quality. It only works when the original streams are allowed in the new container; if they are not, the tool re-encodes the file automatically.
Speed and file size limits
Extracting audio is quick: the sound from a ten-minute video usually converts in well under a minute. Re-encoding video is much heavier work, and a browser cannot use your graphics card for it the way desktop software can. Expect a 1080p video to take longer than its own running time on an average laptop, and longer again on a phone.
Because the result is built in your device's memory, very large files can fail. Files up to a few hundred megabytes are normally fine on a computer. Phones have less memory, so keep to shorter clips there. Keep the tab open and in front while a conversion runs, since browsers slow down background tabs.
What it cannot convert
Copy-protected files, such as downloads saved inside streaming apps or DRM-protected purchases, cannot be read by this or any other standard converter. The tool also works on files you already have: it does not download videos from websites.
