An end-of-service benefit can be a payment your employer owes when you leave, or money regularly paid into an investment arrangement. The distinction affects what you should monitor during employment. A projected gratuity figure and a savings-account valuation answer different questions, even when contribution rates were designed to broadly match traditional accrual.

Key point: Check the actual scheme and governing rules. DIFC DEWS, an ADGM employer's written scheme option and the MOHRE alternative Savings Scheme are not interchangeable products. Investment returns, access arrangements, charges and earlier service all need their own explanation.

Traditional Gratuity and Funded Savings

With traditional gratuity, the employer calculates a statutory entitlement at departure using the applicable service and wage rules. You normally track the employment record and estimated liability rather than a personal investment portfolio. A pay rise can affect a final-salary-based calculation, subject to the relevant law.

A funded scheme receives contributions during employment. Its statement should distinguish money paid in from changes in investment value and charges. Earlier contributions do not automatically get recalculated at a later salary. A positive investment return can increase the account, while losses or fees can reduce it; an illustrative growth projection is not an entitlement.

DIFC DEWS and Qualifying Alternatives

DIFC describes DEWS as a professionally managed defined-contribution arrangement with voluntary saving options. Introduced in February 2020, it replaced future traditional accrual for eligible staff. Employers using an alternative must meet the qualifying-scheme requirements. Request the scheme name and membership record rather than accepting an informal description such as a company retirement plan.

The published core employer rates are 5.83% of basic salary below five years' service and 8.33% at the applicable higher-service tier. Check the anniversary treatment with payroll. Ask separately about any legacy gratuity from before the transition, exemptions and voluntary deductions. Those details can make a single combined balance misleading.

MOHRE's Alternative Savings Scheme

The federal alternative system is optional for participating employers and covers eligible private-sector and free-zone arrangements. Employers may enrol selected employee groups through the approved process. MOHRE-published guidance lists monthly basic-salary contribution rates of 5.83% and 8.33%, according to service, and permits additional employee contributions within the scheme's limits.

The published voluntary limit is 25% of total wage under the applicable monthly or annual arrangement. This is not a universal limit for every UAE savings product. The federal system includes different investment options, including a capital-guarantee option for the specified category and risk-based portfolios. Ask what protection your selected option actually promises.

ADGM: Check the Written Choice

ADGM retains gratuity under its own employment rules. Its official guidance permits an employer to offer a pension or savings scheme as an alternative, with the employee's written choice. Choosing the alternative generally replaces gratuity unless otherwise agreed. It does not establish that all ADGM staff must join DEWS or pay the DIFC contribution rates.

Before choosing, ask for a comparison that identifies the contribution basis, employer commitment, charges, investment menu and treatment of service already completed. Request the withdrawal and transfer rules in writing. If the employer's explanation relies on a brochure, make sure the employment agreement and scheme rules describe the same promise.

Worked Example: Contributions Are Not the Balance

Hypothetical illustration using the published 5.83% rate: assume eligible monthly basic pay is AED 10,000 and remains unchanged for twelve full contribution months below five years' service. Employer contributions are AED 583 monthly, or AED 6,996 annually. A voluntary AED 300 monthly adds AED 3,600, making combined contributions AED 10,596.

Separate hypothetical valuation: if the statement then records an AED 400 investment gain and AED 100 in charges, the simplified closing value is AED 10,896, assuming no opening balance or withdrawals. If the investment movement were instead a loss of AED 400, that value would be AED 10,096. Neither movement is a forecast or a quoted scheme fee.

The example deliberately separates contribution arithmetic from investment outcomes. Actual statements reflect when payments arrive, units purchased, valuation dates and the provider's fee structure. Do not compare a partial-month screenshot with a full-year payroll total and conclude money is missing without reconciling the dates.

Check These Details Before Adding Your Own Money

  • Employer funding: confirm contributions were credited, not merely listed on a payslip.
  • Investment choice: understand asset mix, risk, currency and any guarantee's scope.
  • Charges: request current fund and administration costs; historic launch fees may no longer describe the product.
  • Access: check employer-funded and voluntary pots separately for withdrawal conditions.
  • Administration: keep contact details and beneficiary nominations current under the provider's rules.

Keep an accessible cash reserve outside long-term investments for rent, relocation and unexpected expenses. Choosing a voluntary contribution because of a projected return can create a cash shortage if you later need the money on different terms. Compare your expected spending date with the portfolio's risk rather than choosing solely by last year's performance.

When You Change Jobs

Download statements, verify the last contribution and ask what happens after employment ends. Check whether retaining the account, withdrawing or transferring is available, what documentation is required and which charges continue. A new employer may use a different arrangement; do not assume the account automatically follows your new payroll.

Read our gratuity, ILOE and life insurance comparison. The gratuity calculator helps with an applicable traditional entitlement, while the salary calculator helps express voluntary saving as a monthly budget. Neither predicts an investment account's future value.
