A UAE residence visa does not tell you who pays for a spouse's or child's health insurance. Start with the emirate's rules, then check employment benefits and sponsorship arrangements. Confirm each person's coverage rather than assuming an employee's card extends to everyone at home.

Dubai vs Abu Dhabi: Who Arranges Family Cover?
| Question | Dubai | Abu Dhabi |
|---|---|---|
| Employee's cover | The employer must fund it. DHA says the employee's own premium cannot be deducted from salary. | The employer has an employment-based insurance obligation under DoH rules. |
| Spouse and children | Employer-paid family cover is encouraged. If absent, the resident sponsor must arrange it. | DoH's manual identifies employer responsibility for a dependent spouse and three children below 18. |
| Other relatives | The sponsor must ensure valid cover where no other compliant arrangement exists. | The sponsor must cover sponsored residents outside employment-based cover, such as parents or additional children. |
Ask HR for the actual insured-member list and family-benefit wording. Check names, start dates, eligibility and funding of upgrades. A spouse with their own employment cover may already have a compliant arrangement; verify before buying another policy.
Abu Dhabi: Check the Basic Plan Contribution
The UAE Government summary describes responsibility for one spouse and three children under 18. A more specific DoH announcement, effective 1 July 2016, says employees under the Abu Dhabi Basic Plan pay 50% of eligible dependents' premiums. Other dependents, including parents and a fourth child, are fully funded by the individual. It also identifies a domestic-worker exception for Emirati households.
This is a Basic Plan rule, not a uniform split for every Abu Dhabi family policy. The announcement is historical: obtain written confirmation from HR or the insurer of what applies to your current product. Do not read the general family-cover obligation as a promise of free family insurance.
Premium Ranges: Verified Benchmarks and Limits
No market-wide typical family-premium range was verified from official sources. Age, medical history, maternity benefits, network and territory affect pricing. These are published product benchmarks, not market averages or maximum prices.
| Reference | Annual benchmark | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Dubai: DNI child dependent, age 0â17 | From AED 805 per person | One insurer's starting prices, excluding PSP charges and VAT; eligibility and a final quotation apply. |
| Dubai: DNI female-spouse dependent, age 18â45 | From AED 1,857 per person | |
| Dubai: DNI elderly dependent, age 60+ | From AED 6,630 per person | |
| Abu Dhabi: eligible Flexible policy | AED 750 per person in the 2023 official resolution | Medical acceptance and eligibility apply. Not a universal Basic Plan tariff; obtain a current quotation. |
The selected Dubai category starting prices span AED 805â6,630, but that is not the range within which all family policies fall. Enhanced or international cover needs a separate quote. Do not estimate a parent's premium using a child's rate.
DoH describes Flexible cover as an option for specified eligible groups, including certain families without employer cover, subject to insurer assessment. Its published annual treatment limit is AED 150,000. A low premium does not establish that its network, eligibility or benefits suit your family.
Worked Examples: Family Budget and Cost Sharing
Illustration using the Dubai starting figures above: one eligible female spouse aged 30 and two children aged 6 and 10 total AED 1,857 + AED 805 + AED 805 = AED 3,467 annually before PSP charges and VAT, about AED 288.92 monthly before additions. Assessment may change the quoted total. This is not an offer.
Separate hypothetical Abu Dhabi example: assume eligible dependents' Basic Plan premiums total AED 4,800 and the 50% rule applies. The employee's share is AED 2,400 annually, or AED 200 monthly. AED 4,800 is a sample total, not a verified premium. Treatment contributions are additional.
What to Check in the Policy
- Local compliance: get confirmation that the product meets the rules applicable to residency and sponsorship. Do not assume a Dubai policy satisfies Abu Dhabi requirements.
- Network: check the actual paediatrician, maternity hospital, specialist and pharmacy branches, plus referral rules.
- Annual limit and sublimits: compare the overall maximum with caps for medicines, maternity and other benefits. An annual limit is not a cash payout.
- Medical history: disclose conditions and medicines accurately. Request written pre-existing-condition terms, exclusions and waiting periods.
- Maternity and newborns: check delivery, complications, neonatal care, waiting periods and when to enrol the baby. Do not assume indefinite cover under the mother's policy.
- Patient contributions: compare deductibles, co-insurance, per-visit caps and reimbursement. Lower premiums can leave larger clinic bills.
- Territory: distinguish planned treatment outside the emirate from emergency and overseas cover.
- Continuity: check effective dates, renewal and job or sponsor changes before cancelling an existing policy.
Keep a Family Insurance File
Save each person's schedule, benefits, network list and medical declarations, plus HR's payment confirmation. Check pre-authorisation before planned admission; keep approvals and receipts. If refused, request written reasons and use the insurer's complaints channel, followed by the appropriate health regulator where applicable.
