A delayed salary creates two problems at once: proving what is owed and paying bills before the money arrives. A clear arrears ledger helps with the first; a dated essential-spending plan helps with the second. Keep them separate. Recording the full missing salary as available income may make a budget look balanced while the bank account cannot cover the next rent cheque or grocery purchase.

Identify the wage obligation and the right authority

The UAE Government's salary guidance says establishments registered with MOHRE must pay wages on the due date through the Wage Protection System. Use your employment contract, wage period and the current official guidance when establishing what was due. Do not rely on an old social-media description of enforcement timing as permission for an employer to delay payment. Your agreed due date and the regulator's enforcement process are different questions.

Confirm whether your employer is within MOHRE's system or another employment authority. DIFC, ADGM, government roles and domestic work may require different routes. Find the official complaint service through the relevant authority rather than through unsolicited messages offering to recover wages for a fee. Keep control of your own account credentials and submit documents only through a channel you have independently verified.

Make a ledger that another person can check

Use one row for each wage period. Include the contractual amount, adjustments supported by a payslip, the date due, every amount received and the remaining difference. Attach the bank transaction reference to the relevant receipt. If an employer pays two months together, ask which periods the transfer covers. Otherwise a later reviewer may mistakenly read a large payment as proof that all earlier salary was settled.

Keep original files where possible: contract, offer, payslips, bank statements and written payment promises. A screenshot can be useful for quick reference, but preserve the underlying message or statement too. Avoid editing evidence to make it look tidier. If sensitive unrelated transactions are not required, ask the authority how to submit a suitable statement without unnecessarily exposing the rest of your household finances.

Worked example: partial wages across three months

Assume the contract provides AED 7,500 each month. In the first month AED 5,000 arrives, in the second AED 7,500 arrives, and in the third nothing arrives. Total expected wages are AED 22,500. Total receipts are AED 12,500. The outstanding amount is AED 10,000, made up of AED 2,500 from the first month and AED 7,500 from the third. The fully paid middle month does not erase the earlier shortfall.

Now suppose a later AED 4,000 payment is explicitly allocated to those arrears. The remaining balance falls to AED 6,000. Record its actual receipt date and retain the allocation message. Do not rewrite the earlier rows as if the money arrived on time. The payment history and the remaining debt answer different questions, and an accurate timeline may matter when explaining late household charges or an unresolved complaint.

Ask for a written reconciliation

Send a concise request listing the periods, amounts received and your calculated balance. Ask the employer to identify any disagreement with a specific entry and provide the corresponding record. If payroll says the deduction represents an advance, request the advance date and agreement. A concrete reconciliation is easier to investigate than a long message combining salary, leave, insurance, performance and personal expenses without separate totals.

Retain the complaint reference and keep later correspondence attached to the same case. An employer's promised payment date is useful evidence but should remain a promise in your cash forecast. When money arrives, update the authority through the proper process if required. Do not sign an acknowledgement saying all amounts have been received when your records show otherwise; seek clarification through the responsible authority before signing inaccurate wording.

Protect the next two weeks of essentials

List food, necessary transport, housing, utilities and committed debt payments by date. Suppose accessible savings are AED 2,200 and unavoidable bills before the next expected review total AED 3,100. The immediate cash gap is AED 900, not the full wage-arrears balance. Identify a realistic source for that gap and contact relevant providers early if an arrangement is needed. Keep written confirmation of any changed payment terms.

Pause purchases that can wait and inspect automatic renewals. Avoid treating a high-cost cash advance as free bridging money; fees and interest may persist after salary resumes. If family support is available, agree the amount and repayment expectations clearly. Record it as support or borrowing, not recovered wages. Maintaining the distinction helps you see whether the employer's payment actually resolves the household's temporary obligations.

Do not infer immigration decisions from a wage complaint

A wage case, employment termination and residence status are connected in real life but remain separate administrative matters. Before leaving work, changing employer or travelling, ask the competent authority about the actual process for your circumstances. An unpaid salary does not make every notice or permit requirement disappear automatically. Equally, uncertainty about a permit should not stop you from documenting the wages you believe remain due.

Once payment is received, reconcile the net bank amount against the agreed settlement and any lawful supported deductions. Restore essential reserves before restarting all discretionary spending. Keep the final outcome and evidence safely, including any unresolved balance. A closed conversation with payroll is not the same as a fully reconciled account, and the household should not have to rediscover the missing month during the next financial emergency.

Put the numbers to work

Use the salary calculator to normalise the contract amount, the percentage calculator to reconcile partial payments and the date calculator for your evidence timeline. None of these determines a complaint outcome or replaces the official wage record.
