Being medically insured does not mean your normal salary will continue throughout an illness. A policy may pay eligible treatment costs while payroll moves through different sick leave bands. For a household with rent cheques, school payments and loan instalments, the practical task is to forecast both cash coming in and treatment contributions going out. Start when leave becomes likely, rather than waiting for the first smaller salary transfer.

Establish which employment rules apply

For workers covered by the federal private-sector Labour Law, Article 31 provides up to 90 days of sick leave per year after probation: the first 15 with full pay, the next 30 with half pay and the remaining period without pay. Leave can be continuous or intermittent. Probation, work injuries and specified misconduct circumstances need separate treatment. Government employment, domestic work, DIFC and ADGM should not be calculated automatically using this framework. Ask HR to identify the applicable rules before relying on a spreadsheet.

The law also requires notification within three business days and a medical report from the medical authority. Arrange certification through the appropriate medical provider and retain the submitted copy. Sending a message to a manager and updating the payroll leave system may be different steps. Ask which action records the absence officially and who can confirm receipt when the usual HR contact is unavailable.

Build a running leave balance

List earlier approved sick absences in the same service year. A new certificate does not necessarily restart the full-pay allowance. Suppose payroll records show six days already used; a later ten-day absence can cross a pay-band boundary. Request the year boundary, accumulated days and remaining entitlement in writing. If your payslip uses an unfamiliar code, ask for its meaning rather than assuming every deduction is a sick-pay adjustment.

Record calendar dates alongside the number payroll accepts. Do not quietly replace approved calendar days with your normal working-week count. A weekend inside a continuous certificate may affect the record differently from separate intermittent absences. Where a holiday overlaps, get the classification confirmed. The purpose of your list is to reconcile the employer's calculation, not to invent an alternative leave entitlement.

Worked example: fifty approved days

Assume an employee is past probation, has used no sick leave in the relevant year, earns a constant AED 9,000 monthly wage and has a payroll-approved daily equivalent of AED 300 for this illustration. Fifty approved days span 15 full-pay days, 30 half-pay days and five unpaid days. The first band contributes AED 4,500, the second AED 4,500 and the last zero. Total illustrated sick pay is AED 9,000 across the fifty-day period.

Normal pay for fifty days at the assumed daily amount would be AED 15,000. The difference is AED 6,000. That comparison does not say the next single payslip will be AED 3,000: certificate dates may straddle two or three payroll periods, and other worked days remain payable. Put each absence date into the correct pay month before forecasting bank transfers. Confirm the wage basis with payroll; the example deliberately holds it constant.

Translate the reduction into a household plan

Suppose essential household outgoings during those fifty days total AED 11,800 and available sick pay totals AED 9,000. The immediate operating gap is AED 2,800 before medical contributions. If the household separately expects AED 700 in eligible patient payments, it needs AED 3,500 of accessible funding. This is a cash requirement, distinct from the AED 6,000 comparison with normal earnings. Confusing the two can lead to either underfunding bills or unnecessarily emptying savings.

Make a dated list of rent, utilities, food, transport to appointments and debt payments. Delay discretionary purchases first. Contact providers before an instalment becomes overdue if a change is needed, and keep any revised arrangement in writing. A verbal conversation about flexibility should not be entered as an approved payment holiday. Check whether a household partner can cover a temporary gap without disrupting another essential bill.

Keep treatment and payroll records separate

Maintain one file for certificates, leave approvals and payslips, and another for authorisations, invoices and insurer statements. The same appointment can produce evidence needed by both teams, but an insurer's approval is not an HR leave approval. Conversely, approved paid absence does not guarantee a particular medicine or hospital is covered. Ask the insurer about network, deductible and benefit limits before planned treatment, using the actual policy number.

Avoid recording an expected reimbursement as spendable money until its amount and timing are sufficiently clear. If a clinic requires upfront payment, budget the full cash outlay even when part may later return. Track the reimbursement separately so it reduces the correct medical category when received. This prevents an apparently balanced illness budget from hiding a temporary bank-account shortage.

Reconcile the return-to-work month

When work resumes, compare the leave ledger, gross pay, deductions and deposited amount. Look for sick days counted twice, certificates extending beyond the approved end date and adjustments carried from the previous payroll. Ask for a correction with dates and amounts rather than an unexplained claim that salary looks low. Keep a copy of the answer and verify that the correction actually reaches the bank.

Rebuild the emergency balance gradually after recovery. If AED 3,500 was used and AED 500 can be restored each month, seven contributions replace it before interest or other changes. Keep that transfer separate from ongoing treatment spending. A realistic recovery plan protects future rent and routine care without assuming immediate return to every previous spending habit.

Put the numbers to work

Use the salary tool to express regular income monthly, the percentage tool to check the reduction, and the date tool to mark certificate and payroll dates. These tools do not determine medical eligibility or replace your employer's leave record.
