The result is supposed to guide your diet — eat that many to maintain weight, eat less to lose weight. A desk worker who sits for 8–9 hours at the office, drives to and from work, and sits during meals is moving far less than someone with the same gym schedule but a job that requires them to be on their feet, walking around a shop floor or a hospital or a construction site. The job matters enormously, and in Dubai, most office jobs don't require movement outside of the gym.
The Step-Count Reality Check
The most reliable way to know your actual activity level is to track your daily steps for a week or two. A sedentary person with no structured exercise averages 3,000–5,000 steps per day. A lightly active person (office job but some incidental movement, or regular gym sessions) is usually 6,000–8,000 steps. A moderately active person (active job or daily intentional exercise plus movement) hits 8,000–10,000 steps. Very active people (manual labor, athletic training, or a highly active lifestyle) exceed 10,000–15,000 steps regularly.
Most office workers in Dubai, even those who gym regularly, fall into the 5,000–7,000 step range — which corresponds to sedentary or lightly active, not moderately active or very active. A simple pedometer or step-counter app (built into most smartphones) can reveal this reality in under a week, which then informs a much more accurate activity factor for your TDEE calculation.
Why This Matters for Diet Results
If you calculate your TDEE using a 1.55 activity factor (moderately active) when your real activity is 1.2–1.3 (sedentary to lightly active), you could be overestimating your daily calorie burn by 300–500 calories. If you're eating according to that overestimated number, you'll consume more calories than your body actually burns, leading to slow weight gain or very slow weight loss. You'll wonder why your calorie counting isn't working when the real issue is that the starting number — the TDEE — was too high.
Conversely, if someone who is genuinely active underestimates their activity and uses too low a multiplier, they might restrict calories below their true needs, leading to excessive hunger, fatigue, and unsustainable dieting. If you're losing weight faster than you intended, add calories. If you're not losing weight, subtract calories. Your real-world data is more accurate than the calculator, and that's how you converge on your actual metabolic needs.
