What BMR Measures

BMR is the energy your body needs for its core functions — breathing, circulating blood, repairing cells, keeping your organs running — measured as if you spent 24 hours completely at rest with no activity at all. It's not how many calories you actually burn in a normal day; it's the floor underneath that number.

How BMR Is Calculated

The most widely used formula today is the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which estimates BMR from age, sex, height and weight. It replaced older formulas like Harris-Benedict because it tends to be more accurate for most people, particularly at higher body weights.

Why BMR Alone Isn't Your Calorie Target

BMR is not TDEE: your actual daily calorie burn (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) is your BMR multiplied by an activity factor that accounts for movement, exercise, and daily life — BMR is only the resting baseline underneath it.

Eating at exactly your BMR every day would mean eating as if you were unconscious in bed 24 hours a day — far too little for anyone who moves, works, or exercises at all.

What Changes Your BMR

  • Muscle mass — more muscle burns more calories at rest than fat does
  • Age — BMR generally declines gradually with age
  • Sex — men typically have a higher BMR than women at the same height and weight, largely due to differences in average muscle mass
  • Body size — larger bodies generally have a higher BMR simply because there's more tissue to maintain
